Istanbul is home to two massive airports: Istanbul Airport (IST) on the European side and Sabiha Gökçen Airport (SAW) on the Asian side. Because Turkish Airlines connects to more countries than any other airline, millions of travelers experience long layovers here. If your layover is 6 hours or longer, you can easily venture out of the airport and get a taste of this spectacular city. Here is how to plan your excursion perfectly.

Crucial Airport Logistics: Luggage, Visas, and Transit Times

Before you leave the airport terminal, keep these essential details in mind:

  • Transit Time: Both IST and SAW airports are located about 40–50 kilometers from the city center (Sultanahmet/Taksim). Plan for at least 1 to 1.5 hours of travel time each way.
  • Luggage Storage: Both airports have luggage storage facilities (Bagaj Emanet) and electronic lockers in the arrivals hall where you can safely leave your carry-on bags.
  • Visas: Check if your nationality requires an e-Visa or visa on arrival to enter Turkey. Ensure you have the electronic document printed or on your phone before passing through border control.
  • Touristanbul: If you are flying with Turkish Airlines and have a layover between 6 and 24 hours, you may qualify for a free city tour, including transport and meals. Check the Touristanbul desk near the hotel desk in the arrivals hall.

Option 1: The 6-Hour Layover (Fast & Panoramic)

With only 6 hours, you must be extremely careful. You will have about 2 to 2.5 hours of actual sightseeing time.

The Plan:

  1. Take the M11 Metro Line from Istanbul Airport (IST) to Kağıthane or Gayrettepe, then transfer to the city network, or simply take a direct taxi to Karaköy.
  2. Walk across the lower level of the Galata Bridge to enjoy the views of fishermen and the skyline of mosques.
  3. Grab a quick Balık Ekmek (traditional fish sandwich) from the boats in Eminönü or a Turkish coffee in a historic cafe.
  4. Head back immediately to the airport. We recommend leaving the city center at least 3 hours before your departure flight.

 

Option 2: The 12-Hour Layover (The Historic Essentials)

A 12-hour layover gives you a comfortable window of 6 to 7 hours in the city center. This is perfect for exploring the historic core: Sultanahmet.

The Plan:

  • Morning: Take the Havaist airport shuttle bus directly to Sultanahmet. Start your tour at the majestic Hagia Sophia (Ayasofya). Right across the square, visit the Blue Mosque (Sultanahmet Camii).
  • Midday: Descend into the mysterious Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı) to see the subterranean columns and the Medusa heads. Enjoy a lunch of traditional meatballs at Tarihi Sultanahmet Köftecisi.
  • Afternoon: Walk 15 minutes to the labyrinthine Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı). Wander through the historic corridors, sample Turkish delights, and shop for souvenirs.

A full 24 hours allows you to dive deep into the contrast between the historical European side and the trendy Asian side.

Day 1: History and Modernity (European Side)

  • Start in Sultanahmet visiting Hagia Sophia and Topkapi Palace.
  • In the afternoon, cross the Galata Bridge and take the historic funicular up to Istiklal Street. Walk down to the iconic Taksim Square.
  • Have dinner at a rooftop restaurant in Beyoğlu overlooking the Bosphorus. Stay overnight in a boutique hotel in Karaköy or Galata.

 

Day 2: A Trip to Asia

  • Wake up early and take a public ferry from Karaköy or Eminönü to Kadıköy on the Asian side. Enjoy a traditional Turkish breakfast by the waterfront.
  • Explore the colorful streets of the Kadıköy Fish Market and Moda neighborhood.
  • Take the Marmaray train back under the Bosphorus to the European side, retrieve your luggage, and head to the airport.
